Winnipeggers linked closer than you might suspect
Dollars and Sense/David Christianson
You have probably heard the theory that everyone in the world is connected with only six degrees of separation. It is sometimes called the Kevin Bacon theory, as he is the prototypical Hollywood example. You can connect him to any other Hollywood celebrity in fewer than six steps, based on who he's made movies with, and the spouses, ex-spouses and co-workers of those people.
My theory is that in Winnipeg, the actual separation is negative decimal five degrees of separation. I have done the math. (I will publish a book next year called, You Can't Have an Affair if You're from Winnipeg.) More proof is presented to me regularly.
Last week I was attending and speaking at the Knowledge Bureau conference in Texas called, The Boomers, an Economic Time Bomb.
I was explaining my Winnipeg theory to a couple from Windsor, Ont., who were skeptical. So I gave them the name of a friend of mine from Winnipeg who had lived in Windsor for a few years and asked them if they knew him. To their amazement (and mine) they said "Yes," they knew him, and became convinced of the power of Winnipeggers in the world.
What got me going on this discussion was that one of the other speakers in Texas turned out to be someone I had not seen since high school, and there we were connecting in San Antonio. Elaine Froese made a wonderful presentation called, Courageous Conversations and the Farm. It contained many terrific lessons for all professional advisers, and farm and business families.
I strongly recommend her book, Planting the Seed of Hope, to all advisers or members of family businesses or farm families. In fact, it is a terrific guide for members of any family, in helping people talk to each other. There are very practical lessons on how to talk about difficult subjects and make sure everyone is heard, while minimizing defensiveness.
Although Elaine (www.elainefroese.com) works as coach primarily with farm families and women, I found her insights, lessons and unconditional encouragement to be applicable to all families. I am tempted to say that family businesses are really the ones in need of this help, as the stakes are higher but really, what's more important than any family learning to listen and talk to other family members?
She provides a number of excellent conversation starters, for potentially difficult subjects like MONEY.
